Note: Prior to removing the rings, check the ring-to- groove clearance of each compression ring.


1. With the piston rings correctly installed on the piston, check the ring-to-groove clearance of each compression ring, using a feeler gauge.

2. When checking the piston ring to groove clearance, always refer to the specifications table (see Pistons).

Note: If the ring-to-groove clearance is too large, replace the piston rings with a new set. If the gap remains too large with new piston rings, the piston must also be replaced. If the gap is too small, check the piston ring grooves closely for distortion, replacing the piston as necessary. Do not file the ring grooves.
