Ignition switch and steering lock (Yamaha FZ1)

ON (On _); OFF (Off _); LOCK (Lock)


The ignition switch/steering lock operates the ignition and lights and is also used to lock the steering wheel. The different lock positions are described below.

Note. For normal use of the motorcycle, use a standard key - (with black head). To reduce the risk of losing the code re-registration key (with red head) keep it in a safe place and use it only to re-register the code.


ON position



All electrical circuits on the motorcycle are energized, the instrument lights, tail light, license plate light, and parking lights are illuminated, and the engine can be started. In this position the key cannot be removed.

Note. The headlight lights up automatically when the engine starts and does not go out until the key is turned to the OFF position, even if the engine has stalled.


OFF position



All electrical systems are turned off. In this position the key can be removed.

Warning! Never turn the key to the OFF or LOCK position while the motorcycle is moving, otherwise the electrical systems will be turned off, which may result in loss of control of the motorcycle or an accident.



LOCK position (Lock)



The steering wheel is locked and the electrical systems are turned off. In this position the key can be removed.

To lock the steering wheel





1. Press; 2. Rotate


1. Turn the steering wheel to the left as far as it will go.

2. In the OFF position, press the key and, while continuing to press, turn it to the LOCK position.

3. Remove the key.

To unlock the steering wheel





1. Press; 2. Rotate


Press the key and, while continuing to press, turn it to the OFF position.

Position P (Parking)



The steering wheel is locked, the tail light, license plate light and parking lights are on. The hazard lights and turn signals may be on, but the rest of the motorcycle's electrical system is off. In this position the key can be removed.

The steering wheel must be locked before turning the key to position P.

Warning! Do not use the ignition switch in park position for a long time, otherwise the battery may be discharged.
