The history of Ducati — the path from radio components to the world's largest motorcycle manufacturer

Company Ducati is a world-famous Italian manufacturer specializing in the creation of motorcycles of various classes. The brand has come a long and difficult path to achieve the recognition and reputation it has today.

The beginning of the path to world fame

The Ducati company began its journey back in 1926, when the brothers Adriano, Marcello and Bruno Ducati founded production. And his line of activity was far from the motorcycle industry. Initially, the brand specialized in the production of radio components, which were in great demand at that time.

A sharp change in the brand's specialization occurred after the end of World War II. During that period, Italy made every effort to restore its own economy. What was the already nationalized company connected to? «Ducati», which was tasked with producing small motors for bicycles.

The company already took the first step towards recognition with a new profile when the unconventional 48 cm³ Cucciolo engine rolled off its assembly line. It had a non-standard design and was capable of developing a power of 1 hp. The development of the brand has become a real bestseller. In just 4 years of operation, Ducati has produced more than 200 thousand of these engines. In parallel with them, the brand’s engineers are developing two more types of motors:
  • 60 cm³ Cucciolo T3, capable of developing 2 hp;
  • Sports 48 cm³ engine.

By the end of the 40s, some Italian manufacturers began to master the production of motorcycle products with engines «Ducati». This prompted the founders of the brand to start creating full-cycle motorcycles themselves.

The first Ducati series

Your first motorcycle company «Ducati» presented in 1950. It was the Ducati 60 Sport model, capable of developing a power of 2.5 hp. almost two years later, the brand introduces two more bikes to the market:
  • Ducati 98 Sport
  • Cruiser

Lungs Ducati 60 Sport and Ducati 98 Sport motorcycles are becoming almost bestsellers. But the heavy and technically complex Cruiser bike is not in such demand on the market.

In 1954, the company appointed the talented engineer Fabio Taglioni to the position of chief designer, whose efforts contributed to the current popularity of the Italian manufacturer. Under his leadership, the 100 Gran Sport model was produced, the design of which became the prototype for all subsequent motorcycle models.

Between 1956 and 1957, three more new motorcycle products of the brand were created based on the 100 Gran Sport:
  • 124 cm³ 125 Sport
  • 175 cm³ 175 Gran Sport
  • 204 cm³ 200 Elite

Participation of Ducati motorcycles in motorcycle racing

Presented by the company «Ducati» motorcycles managed to win a series of victories at the Italian national motorcycle races. Later, in 1956, for participation in the Grand Prix, the brand modified the 125 Sport, increasing its power and speed.

The new, improved bike, driven by Italian rider Alberto Gandossi, wins 2 out of 7 races and brings the company a silver medal at the world championship. The second Italian motorcycle racer Luigi Taveri managed to win a bronze medal on a motorcycle «Ducati».

In 1959, for new competitions, a Ducati engineer develops a new engine with increased hp to 22.5. However, a bike equipped with it only takes third place in the world championship.

For the 1960 races, a 250 cm³ sports bike with a power of 37 hp is created. The fast motorcycle was capable of accelerating to 215 km/h, but was unreliable. On the new bike, the English racer Mike Hailwood managed to win only fifth place and refused to compete on motorcycles «Ducati» at the next competitions, switching to Honda bikes, which brought him the championship title.

This turn of events ruined all racing plans «Ducati». However, past victories of Italian motorcycles did not go unnoticed by the world community. Ducati bikes became known on different continents, which opened up the opportunity for the company to enter the world market.

Conquering the world market

Since 1961, Ducati has been conquering the markets of England and the USA. Consumers in these segments required powerful bikes with large engine displacements. Since 1961, the trademark «Ducati» announced to the local and foreign markets:
  • 249 cm³ 250 Monza, developing a speed of 130 km/h.
  • Ducati 250 Mach 1, accelerating to 150 km/h.
  • 340 cm³ 340 Sebring bike for the American market.
  • 48 cm³ Piuma moped for Italian buyers.
  • Lightweight 48 Sport motorcycle.
  • Scooter 48 Brio-9, and later - modernized models with a two-stroke engine of 79 and 94 cm³.

Since 1975, Ducati has resumed production of small-capacity motorcycles. Thus, the Italian manufacturer’s line included 125 Enduro bikes, produced with two types of engines: 394 cm³ and 497 cm³. Later, a sports analogue of this model range, Sport Desmo, was introduced.

In 1978, Ducati decided to try its luck again on sports shingles. After winning the competition «Tourist Trophy» the brand launches mass production of the Ducati 900 S/S, which has become popular and in demand in all markets.

In 1985, the Italian company shocked the public by announcing that Ducati was becoming the property of the concern Cagiva and ceases production of motorcycles.

Revival of Ducati motorcycle production

The new owner was unable to abandon such a profitable and promising direction as the production of motorcycles. In addition, Ducati bikes were incredibly popular not only in Italy, but also in the markets of Japan, Australia and America.

To continue production, it was decided to update the model range. Yes, new «Ducati» become:
  • 1. Sports bike 750 F1.
  • 2. Sports touring motorcycle 750 Paso.

In 1987, the company presented the 851 Superbike Strada superbike, created specifically to participate in the world motorcycle racing championship. In 1988, this bike took 5th place in the race. Two years later piggy bank «Ducati» adds another championship title.

Over the next few years, the 851 Superbike Strada was upgraded, increasing power, volume, and replacing other components. Innovations began to be used in other bikes of the brand, such as the 900 Super Sport.

Work to improve the engine does not stop, thanks to which, since 1992, the Ducati lineup has been replenished with new models. One of them was the Ducati 549 Supermono motorcycle. The superbike brings not a single victory to the company's treasury. On its basis, the Ducati Senna model was created in 1998.

In the 1990s, Ducati faces serious financial difficulties. The controlling stake is being purchased by the American company Texas Pacific Group. It is the help of new owners that allows us to increase production volumes, modernize model ranges and improve the quality of motorcycles in a short period of time.

Since 1996, the company has resumed production of Page sports touring motorcycles, updating their engines and increasing the power of the models. After a couple of years in the lineup «Ducati» appear:
  • Ducati ST2
  • Ducati ST4
  • 904 Super Sport
