The history of Aprilia: from bicycle manufacturer to champion in the motorcycle world

Company Aprilia was founded immediately after the end of World War II by Cavalier Alberto Beggio as a bicycle manufacturer in Noale, province of Venice. Its headquarters are still located in Noale, but in 1996 production was moved to the new Aprilia factory in the neighboring municipality of Scorze.

The founder's son, Ivano Beggio, took over the reins of the company in 1968 and immediately began building the moped with a small number of employees. The first models Aprilia entered the market with were the Colibrì, Daniela and Packi, followed by the first off-road motorcycle, the Scarabeo, introduced in 1970 in two displacement variants: 50 and 125 cm³ and remained in production for almost ten years.

The next step in Aprilia's development in the eighties was to expand the range of models offered for sale, also devoting itself to the trials enduro and road motorcycle sectors, produced with different displacements from 50 to 600 cm³. In 1985, a cooperation agreement was signed with an Austrian company Rotax for the supply of engines to a Venetian company. The Touareg was introduced in 1985 and was the first motorcycle based on those used in African rallies.

In the wake of the successes achieved, models with engines of different sizes went on sale: in the 50 cm³ class Aprilia RS 50 (road), ET 50 and RX 50 (enduro) and Red Rose 50 (custom), all with liquid-cooled Minarelli engines; in the 125 cm³ class the very famous Aprilia RS 125 (road), RX 125 (enduro) and Red Rose 125 (custom), all with a Rotax engine equipped with a passive air-controlled exhaust valve (named RAVE and RAVE2, later replaced by electronically controlled); Finally, the 250 class has an RS 250 with an engine Suzuki, which was sold in racing motorcycle liveries and gained a large following, especially among young two-wheel enthusiasts.

Another successful scooter is the Leonardo with a Rotax engine with a displacement of 125 and 150 cm³. In the future, with the supply of engines Yamaha, Leonardo is produced with a displacement of 250 and 300 cm³.
