The history of the Japanese motorcycle manufacturer Suzuki

The Suzuki brand is a company with a long and interesting history that has managed to conquer the world with its developments. And motorcycles occupy a special place in the hearts of consumers «Suzuki». They best implement the company's corporate identity and reflect its main missions, approved by the founder Michio Suzuki himself in 1962.

How it all began

Trademark Suzuki appeared more than a hundred years ago in the city of Hamamatsu and its activities were far from the motorcycle industry. In 1908, a young carpenter, Michio Suzuki, was developing a loom. His goal was to create a device that would make the mother's work easier. And his efforts are not in vain.

Soon Michio presents his mother with a pedal-powered loom. The donated device turns out to be as efficient as possible and surpasses the weaving looms existing at that time in its productivity. This resulted in the still unknown entrepreneur receiving a large number of orders.

Seeing the demand for his inventions, in 1909 Michio Suzuki registered the Suzuki Loom Works company. This is the first trademark, which served as the beginning of the emergence of a huge Japanese corporation, known to everyone today.

Brand awareness «Suzuki» began to bring the innovative mechanism used in Michio looms. It greatly increased the efficiency of the machine, which increased the demand for equipment from textile manufacturers.

Just a year later, in 1920, Suzuki decides to expand its production. To develop and promote products in new areas of activity, the second trademark Suzuki Loom Manufacturing Co. is registered.

Until 1930, the company worked hard to develop innovative weaving machines. Soon, the products of the Japanese brand are supplied to the markets of neighboring countries. Indonesia became the first importing country.

In addition to the weaving machines themselves, since 1930 Michio Suzuki has been actively working on the development of new technology. He is simultaneously mastering several new areas, such as boat engines, cars and motorcycles.

Michio Suzuki pays special attention to the transport sector. In the post-war period, the country's residents needed an inexpensive vehicle. Seeing this need, the founder of the company decided to create a new type of transport. It became a motorized bicycle.

Suzuki introduced the first model of an unusual vehicle in 1952. This period is today regarded as the time when the brand made a unique entry into the motorcycle market. The brand presented the audience with a motorized bicycle called Power Free.

It has become a revolutionary product in the company's range, having a rational and convenient system. Its key feature was the drive, which made it possible to switch movement from pedal to motor. That is, it was possible to set a motorized bicycle in motion either with the help of a pedal or with the help of a motor. In addition, the system provided for the use of both types of drive simultaneously. Appreciating the company's efforts «Suzuki» The Japanese government provided the brand with financial subsidies to continue its cutting-edge developments.

Over the next two years, the manufacturer worked hard to produce motorized bicycles. In 1954, production reached record volumes for that period - the company produced over 6000 models per year. In the same year, the company presented the first full-fledged motorcycle, called Colleda CO. In 1954, another memorable event for the brand took place - the company was renamed Suzuki Motor Co., Ltd.

Gradually the company «Suzuki» begins to gain its share of the motorcycle market. And the best solution to expanding brand awareness is to participate in races. However, Suzuki motorcycles were able to get their first victory on the track only in 1962 when they took part in races on the Isle of Man in the UK. The company managed to take first place in the class of motorcycles with 50 cm³ engines.

In 1980, the brand began mass production of Gemma scooters. The company's new product received advanced 50 cm³ engines.

In 1983, the Japanese manufacturer presented another revolutionary vehicle model. It became RG250 Gamma. This is a unique model for that time, since engineers «Suzuki» They used purely racing technologies adapted for civilian production. It was Suzuki that became one of the first companies to implement this solution, not only in Japan, but throughout the world.

Suzuki in the global market

Since 1968, Suzuki has been actively developing its production abroad. The first overseas production base was opened in Thailand. The new branch was exclusively engaged in the production of motorcycles.

In 1975, car production was also transferred abroad. The first passenger car production base was built in Pakistan in 1975. In 1983, a similar plant appeared in India. This is the company's decision «Suzuki» This led to the fact that the products of the Japanese brand began to be positioned among Indian and Pakistani consumers as indispensable assistants in everyday life.

The best motorcycles of the Japanese brand Suzuki

Despite the fact that the company is actively developing and expanding several areas of activity, it is Suzuki motorcycles that are most famous and in demand throughout the world. For more than a century of presence on the market, the Japanese manufacturer has managed to develop truly legendary models, including:

Bandit

The first Bandit motorcycle model was presented by the company «Suzuki» in 1989. However, the bikes of this series still receive admiring glances today. The main attractive feature of the motorcycles was their aggressive design, significantly different from classic bikes. Bandit bikes were produced in their original form until 2016. Since 2018, the company has been producing small-capacity models.

The first models of the Bandit series received engines of 250 and 400 cm³. They were equipped with a derated engine, which was used in the GSX-R250 sports bike. The engine could easily develop power up to 45 hp. with its small volumes.

Such a powerful engine was used on Bandit models produced before 1995. After this year, the company began to produce motorcycles with a less powerful engine, capable of developing power up to 38 hp.

Boulevard

The Boulevard series of motorcycles rolled off Suzuki's assembly line in 2005. This is a range of cruisers that are the result of minor modernization and the merger of several other series:
  • Intruder
  • Marauder
  • Desperado
  • Volusia
  • Savage

The new motorcycles embody the best ideas that previous engineers «Suzuki» used in sports bikes produced. And this decision contributed to the fact that Boulevard attracted a huge number of consumers who prefer brutal motorcycles.

Initially, the Boulevard series was created for foreign markets, in particular European, American and Australian. The models were positioned as flagships and belonged to the line of the most powerful bikes «Suzuki». And the reason for this lies in the engine used. Boulevard motorcycles received a 1.8 liter two-cylinder engine. Its peculiarity is the use of liquid cooling and the ability to develop power of 125 hp at 7500 rpm.
