The Yamaha YZF-R1 - or R1 for short - is a motorcycle in the supersports/superbikes category from the R series of the Japanese manufacturer Yamaha Motor. It is one of the 1000 cc sports cars built for the longest time to date, with updates often every two years. The latest version has seven adjustable electronic assistance systems. In addition, since 2020 the R1 has had a further developed, Euro 5-compliant engine, improved suspension elements at the front and rear and ride-by-wire throttle control via a throttle twist grip with sensor (APSG).

First generation «RN01» (1998-1999)

The first model with the internal code number 08R was presented to the world public in September 1997 at the EICMA motorcycle trade fair in Milan. The R1 was a newly designed motorcycle. The engine output at launch was 110 kW (150 hp) at 10000 rpm with a maximum torque of 108 Nm. The motorcycle had a dry weight of 177 kg. At 65.3 kg, the 11.8:1 compression, 998 cc engine was 9.5 kg lighter and 81 mm shorter than that of the predecessor YZF 1000 R Thunderace. The fuel-air mixture was supplied by four 40 mm Mikuni carburettors.



The engine's housing-cylinder unit was cast in one piece and was a load-bearing chassis element. The chassis consisted of a rigid aluminum bridge frame (Deltabox II), an upside-down fork and an aluminum double-sided swing arm with top tube. A 1395 mm short wheelbase, a steep steering head angle of 66° and just 92 mm caster were other key features of the consistently sporty machine. The short engine also allowed for a long swing arm of 582 mm, which enables good straight-line travel even at high speeds up to the top speed of 270 km/h.

Second generation «RN04» (2000-2001)

The R1 was revised in the 2000 model year. This includes lower mechanical engine noise, improved (more linear) power delivery, improved transmission function, a weight reduction of 2 kg and lighter titanium rear silencers. The seating position was revised (seat raised by 15 millimeters, tank slightly lowered, angle of the handlebars changed), and the aerodynamics were improved with wind protection, among other things, thanks to a 10 millimeter higher screen.

Third generation «RN09» (2002-2003)

In 2002, Yamaha introduced the third R1 generation, in which many parts were new or further developed. The motorcycle now had intake manifold injection, a new fairing, a bolted - previously welded - rear frame and a new Deltabox III frame. The caster was increased to 103 millimeters. The exhaust manifolds were made of titanium. The maximum power was 112 kW (152 hp) at 10500 rpm, which gave a top speed of 271 km/h and a consumption of 5.7 liters of regular gasoline per 100 km over country and up to "moderate highway speeds".

Fourth generation «RN12» (2004-2005)

The fourth R 1 generation appeared in 2004 as a reaction to the Suzuki GSX-R 1000, which was heavily revised in 2003 and emerged as the winner in the comparison tests of the specialist press. In 2004, Honda presented its new CBR 1000 RR Fireblade with a one-liter displacement. The R1 was revised again during the generation change.



Thanks to a higher compression, larger cylinder bore and shorter piston stroke of 53.6 mm, larger free valve cross-sections and fine work on almost every detail, the peak power of the now very high-revving engine was increased by 13% to 126 kW (172 hp); it was installed tilted forward by 40°. Also new was a ram air dynamic pressure system, which achieved around 10 hp more power at a top speed, which the manufacturer stated as 285 km/h. The aerodynamics were improved by a rear silencer integrated into the rear. The caster was 97 mm.

Fifth generation «RN12» (2006)

In 2006, the peak power was increased by three to 129 kW (175 hp) through revisions to the intake and exhaust ducts. A 20 mm longer swing arm and the fifth generation Deltabox frame were further changes. In addition to the R1, a limited edition YZF-R1 SP with special paintwork, anti-hopping clutch, high-quality Öhlins suspension elements and light aluminum Marchesini forged wheels was offered.

Sixth generation «RN19» (2007-2008)

For the 2007 model year, a heavily revised fifth generation of the YZF-R1 was presented at the Intermot in Cologne, which is technically very similar to the 2006 YZF-R6. For example, Yamaha has installed the YCC-T drive-by-wire system (Yamaha Chip Controlled Throttle, YCC-T) on the new R1, in which the throttle valves are opened with a servomotor and closed with a cable. It also has electronically adjustable intake pipes (YCC-I). After a long tradition of 5-valve systems, Yamaha has now returned to 4 valves per cylinder and designed the engine for more torque in the lower and middle speed ranges. The requirements of the Euro 3 emissions standard resulted in the exhaust system being 6 kg heavier. Other innovations include a 6-piston front brake and a steering damper. Yamaha states that the new YZF-R1 has a maximum output of 132 kW (180 hp) and (139 kW (189 hp) with dynamic pressure system), with a dry weight of 177 kg; the top speed is 285 km/h. The magazine Motorrad determined a test consumption of 8.1 liters of unleaded premium gasoline per 100 km. The tank held 18 liters.

Seventh generation «RN22» (2009-2014)

Since the 2009 model year, the engine has had a crossplane crankshaft, with a counter-rotating balance shaft used to reduce vibration. The engine design provides more torque in the lower speed range, with the sound also being shaped by the ignition order. The engine produces 134 kW (182 hp) at 12500 rpm and has a torque of 116 Nm at 10000 rpm.



In addition, the driver can set three different engine control maps using the Yamaha Chip Controlled Throttle, YCC-T system, which influences the power delivery: Standard (all-round), Mode A with more direct response, B with more restrained power delivery. The exhaust system was also changed, and triangular mufflers are now visible, which are raised up to under the seat at the rear. The aluminum Deltabox frame with magnesium rear has a wheelbase of 1415 mm and a modified wheel suspension.



The steering head angle is 66 degrees and is identical to the original model, while the caster of 102 mm was 10 mm more. This model was the heaviest of all R1 generations, weighing 206 to 215 kg with a full tank. A driving report from the Focus stated that it consumed 6.8 liters/100 km of premium gasoline. Traction control was available from 2012.

Eighth generation «RN32» (2015-2016)

After around 6 years, the newly designed successor was presented at the end of 2014. The newly developed engine produced 147 kW (200 hp) at 13500 rpm. With an empty weight of 199 kg (fully fueled), the weight of the original R1 was reached again. The rear frame is made of magnesium, the engine weighs just under 60 kg. It has a one millimeter larger bore and 1.3 millimeters less stroke than the previous model, 7.1 millimeters less than the original R1. The valves are operated by light, DLC-coated rocker arms instead of bucket tappets; the oil pan and engine cover are made of magnesium, the connecting rods are made of titanium, and the pistons are forged. The R1 also received a complete electronics package, consisting of launch control, slide control, traction control and four-stage "wheelie control" that prevents the front wheel from lifting or can be used to control the front wheel from lifting (lift control, LIF), as well as four different "power modes" and ABS. Because of the compact but comfortable seating position, which is also suitable for taller riders, the test riders of the RN32 compared the driving experience to that of a racing motorcycle. In a test over 50000 km, consumption was 6.7 liters/100 km.



In addition to the basic model, a special model was also launched for professional racing teams and racing drivers. The equipment of the special edition includes electronically controlled spring-damper elements (Electronic Racing Suspension, ERS), fairing parts made of carbon fiber reinforced plastic, a CCU (Communication Control Unit) to integrate smartphones.



Yamaha has been offering both models in modified form since 2016 as naked bike versions of the Yamaha MT-10. About 40 percent of the engine is not from the R1.

Ninth generation «RN49» (2017-2019)

At the EICMA 2017, various improvements were presented for the 2018 model year in connection with the EU-4 classification, especially in the electronics area:

• Electronic chassis (Electronic Racing Suspension, ERS) from Öhlins, with automatic and seamless adjustment of the suspension elements of the fork and shock absorber to the track conditions after analysis with a six-axis inertial sensor Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU).
• Improved ERS settings in the Yamaha Ride Control (YRC)
• Revised Quick Shift System (QSS) with new downshift function
• Improved "Wheelie Control" (Lift Control, LIF)
• Changes to the engine control unit maps ("ECU mapping")
• The racing version R1M is again offered; the rear frame is made of magnesium, the chassis is semi-active and has improved software (second generation Öhlins chassis).

The 2019 machines were specified with a top speed of 285 km/h, measured at 299 km/h.

Tenth generation «RN65» (2020-)

For the 2020 model year, the R1 underwent a more extensive facelift with the following major changes:

• Engine: Newly developed rocker arms and cam profiles, modified intake tract, redesigned cylinder head with, among other things, repositioned injection nozzle assembly to improve combustion efficiency and performance at high speeds, titanium valves; larger crankshaft bearings and revised oil circuit with improved oil channel dimensioning, which enables a smaller oil pump
• KfK fairing based on the M1 model, which increases aerodynamic efficiency by 5%; the lower fairing section that encloses the exhaust system is made of titanium
• Compliance with Euro 5 noise and emissions regulations
• Rear frame made of magnesium, rear fairing made of lightweight carbon fiber reinforced plastic (KfK)
• Öhlins ERS NPX gas pressure telescopic fork
• Chassis and brake electronics extensively expanded
• Rear tires with a 200 cross-section, type Bridgestone Battlax RS11, which are assigned to the "premium" class
• Improved display instruments with thin-film transistors.

The M-version YZF-R1 has the latest electronic chassis generation from Öhlins (Electronic Racing Suspension, ERS). In addition, the driver can intervene more deeply in the electronics using various apps.
