Caution! Never turn the adjustment mechanism beyond the maximum or minimum setting.
Adjust the spring preload as follows:
1. Remove the driver's seat. (For descriptions of removing and installing the driver's seat, see page 3-11 [model XVS1100] or on page 3-12 [Model XVS1100A].)
2. Remove the ignition unit panel quick-fastening pins by pressing on their center with a screwdriver and removing them.

4. Remove the mud shield by removing the quick-release rivets.

5. To increase the spring preload and therefore stiffen the suspension, turn the adjusting ring in the direction (a). To reduce the spring preload and therefore make the suspension softer, turn the adjusting ring in the direction (b).

Note:
- Align the corresponding slot on the adjusting ring with the position indicator on the shock absorber.
- To make adjustments, use a special wrench included in the owner's tool kit.
6. Install the mud shield and ignition unit panel, securing them with quick-release pins.

Note. To install the quick release piston, press the back of the pin until it protrudes from the head of the piston, push the piston into place, and press the pin until it is flush with the head.
7. Install the driver's seat.
Warning! This shock absorber contains high pressure nitrogen gas. To ensure proper handling, read and understand the following information before performing any work on the shock absorber.
The manufacturer does not bear any responsibility for damage to equipment or personal injury that may occur as a result of improper handling of the shock absorber.
- Do not touch or try to open the gas cylinder.
- Do not expose the shock absorber to open flames or other intense heat sources. It may explode due to excessive gas pressure.
- Do not deform or damage the gas cylinder in any way, as this will impair vibration damping.
- Always have your shock absorber serviced by your Yamaha dealer.
