Bearing head play is adjusted by turning an adjuster ring nut (C) screwed onto the steering pin.
Removing the bearings
Remove the front wheel and the fork stanchions as described previously.
Loosen the steering pin clamping bolt (1) and remove the top yoke.
Using a rubber hammer, remove the top yoke from the ring nut (C).
Using service tool code no. 88713.1058. loosen the ring nut (C) and unscrew it from the steering pin.
Remove the seal ring (B), the inner bearing race and the top ring of ball bearings (A) from the headstock.
Support the frame and, using a mallet, knock the steering pin downwards and out together with the bottom yoke.
Remove the ring of ball bearings of the bottom bearing.
At this point the pin still holds the bottom bearing inner race, the seal ring and a shim.
Using a universal puller (see figure) remove the bearing race from the steering pin. Care must be taken during this operation not to damage the race seat.
Caution! Do not refit seal rings and bearings which have been removed. Always fit new components.
Using a punch, remove the outer bearing rings from the headstock. Proceed with care. Do not damage the ring seats.
Reassembly
Clean all contact surfaces and grease with the recommended grease. Insert the shim (D), the seal ring (B) and the bottom bearing inner race (A).
Using the drift code no. 88713.1072 drive the bearing race fully home on the pin.
To fit the outer bearing rings in the headstock, use the service tool 88713.1062 and proceed as follows:
Heat the headstock to 150°C/302°F.
Position the outer rings (E) of the bearings in their seats in the headstock.
Using the service tool, insert the bush (3, with the threaded hole) into the lower ring.
Fit the mobile bush (4) on the upper end of the service tool and then drive it home onto the ring of the upper bearing.
Unscrew the nut (5) and, using a spanner, turn it against the outer rings on the headstock until it stops.
Leave the service tool in position until the headstock has fully cooled; this will ensure that the bearings will remain in their seats.
Befit all the other parts removed previously, inverting the order of the disassembly procedure. Grease the steering head bearings with the recommended grease.
Tighten the adjuster ring nut (C) until it stops against the dust cover ring.
Attach the special bush code no. 88713.1058 to the adjuster ring nut (C).
Using a torque wrench, tighten the adjuster ring nut to the torque specified.
