Inspect

Warning: Only a Harley-Davidson dealer should perform vehicle alignment. Improper alignment can adversely affect sta bility and handling, which could result in death or serious injury.

Warning: Check vehicle alignment according to following proced ures. Incorrect alignment can adversely affect stability and handling, which could result in death or serious injury.

1. See Figure 3-25. Fabricate an alignment tool using a piece of 3.175 mm (0.12 in) diameter aluminum welding rod approximately 558.8 mm (22.0 in) long: a. Grind one end to a blunt point (1). b. Bend rod at a 90 degree angle (3), 38.1 mm (1.5 in) from the blunt point. c. Place a snug-fitting rubber grommet (2) on rod to act as an indicator.

2. Measure distance between rear fork pivot bolt and rear axle alignment plug center: a. See Figure 3-26. Place blunt point of alignment tool (1) in the center of the rear fork pivot bolt (2). b. Slide rubber grommet (3) along tool shaft until it aligns with hole in center of rear axle (4). c. Without moving grommet, position alignment tool on left side of rear fork.

3. Check measurements on both sides of vehicle. a. Left and right measurements must be equal within 0.50 mm (0.02 in) on both sides of vehicle. b. Adjust if necessary.

Adjust

1. See Figure 3-27. Loosen rear axle nut (1).

2. Adjust rear axle.
  • a. Measure the distance from the pivot bolt to axle center on each side.
  • b. Turn nut on axle adjuster (2) counterclockwise to shorten distance on the side with the longer distance.
  • c. Adjust axle until left and right side alignment measurements are equal.

3. Verify drive belt deflection. See Inspect and adjust drive belt and sprockets.

4. Tighten rear axle nut. See Rear wheel.
