Given that motorcycles are operated mainly in the warm season, it is preferable to use special motorcycle synthetic and semi-synthetic oils with a viscosity of SAE 10W40 and an API quality of at least SF for a four-stroke engine and gearbox (SF, SG, SH. SJ onwards) recommended by the manufacturer. According to the operating instructions supplied with the motorcycle, gasoline with an octane rating of at least 95 is allowed.
For a trouble-free ride in the season, it is necessary to regularly inspect the motorcycle: check the engine oil level, tire pressure, tightening of fasteners. Timely inspection of equipment will help ensure its long operation.
Since there are few people who ride a motorcycle all year round (The only exception is perhaps the southern regions), motor vehicles spend several months of the year laid up. Sometimes it happens that after a serviceable and well-driving device in the fall has successfully wintered in the garage, with the onset of spring it completely refuses to start. The reason for this is the owner's ignorance of the need for conservation, or banal forgetfulness and unwillingness to mess with a simple, in general, operation. To avoid problems with the departure on the first warm days, before putting on the winter (long) storage, it is necessary to perform several simple operations that will help protect «health» motorcycle in winter weather.
Naturally, the first thing you need to do is wash the motorcycle and apply special preservation polishes for painted and chrome-plated parts - this is especially important to do with the chrome-plated pipes of the front telescopic fork. It is recommended to treat rubber motorcycle parts, such as oil seals and boots, with silicone rubber grease, which will protect them from cracking in the off-season.
It is impossible to leave gasoline in carburetors for a long time - during downtime, heavy resins precipitate from the fuel, which can clog jets and fuel channels. To prevent this from happening, it is necessary to exhaust all the fuel in the float chamber. Turn the fuel cock flag to the OFF position (closed) and let the engine idle for a while. Once all the fuel has been used up, the engine will shut itself down. It is also possible to simply drain the fuel from the float chambers: there is a drain screw on the float chamber cover of each carburetor at the bottom. It is enough to unscrew it 1-2 turns and all the gasoline will flow out of the float chamber. Of course, it is worth putting a piece of cloth or technical paper under the carburetor, which will absorb the drained fuel. It is recommended to fill the fuel tank with gasoline under the neck before a long parking. A special stabilizer must be added to gasoline, which slows down the breakdown of fuel into fractions. At the beginning of the season, this gasoline will need to be replaced.
To maintain the performance of the battery, it must be removed and taken to a warm room. The ideal option is to periodically discharge the battery by connecting a small light bulb to it, and then charge it again. This will protect the battery from failure.
To protect against corrosion of the engine, it is necessary first of all to close it from access to the inside of the combustion chamber of moist air. Cover the exhaust pipes and air filter inlet with plastic bags and secure with rubber bands or tape. It is necessary to inject a little engine oil or aerosol lubricant into the cylinders (it has a corrosion inhibitor) through the spark plug holes and turn the crankshaft with a starter so that the oil disperses along the cylinder surface.
To save motorcycle tires in the off-season, the pressure in them must be dropped to 0.5-1 atm. and hang both wheels of the motorcycle. To do this, you need to put the motorcycle on the center stand and place either a wooden block of the desired height or a special stand under the fork under the front of the frame. Such a measure will save the rubber from cracking and formation «hernia».
A prerequisite for a good engine start in the spring is a prepared battery. Before winterizing the motorcycle, disconnect the battery, fully charge it, and store it at room temperature and low humidity.
