- The gearbox is in neutral.
- The gear is engaged with the clutch lever depressed and the side stand raised.
Warning!
- Before starting the engine, check the operation of the ignition interlock system as indicated in page 3-21.
- Never ride your motorcycle with the side stand down.
1. Move the fuel cock lever to the "ON" position " ("OPEN").
2. Turn the key to the "ON" position " ("ON") and check whether the engine stop switch is in the "#" position.
3. Place the transmission in neutral.
Note. When neutral is engaged, the neutral indicator should be on; if it is not on, have your Yamaha dealer check the electrical circuits.
4. Turn on the jump starter (air damper) and close the throttle completely. (Description of the trigger action (air damper) given on page 3-10.)
5. Start the engine by pressing the starter switch.
Note. If the engine does not start, release the starter switch and wait a few seconds before trying again. To save battery power, each starting attempt should be as short as possible. Do not crank the engine for more than 10 seconds at any one time.
Carefully!
The oil level warning light should light up when the key is turned to the "ON" position. " ("ON"), and then go out after 2-3 seconds. If the oil level warning light flickers or remains on after starting the engine, stop the engine immediately, then check the engine oil level and check for signs of oil leakage by inspecting the motorcycle. If necessary, add oil and then monitor the warning light again. If the warning light does not light up when the key is turned to the "ON" position " ("ON") or if it does not go off after starting the engine and the oil level is sufficient, have a Yamaha dealer check the electrical circuits.
The engine warning light should also come on when the key is turned to the "ON" position. " ("ON"). If the warning light does not come on when the key is turned to the ON position, flashes, or stays on after starting the engine, have a Yamaha dealer check the electrical circuits.
6. After starting the engine, move the starting lever (air damper) back half its stroke.ECA00045
Caution! To prolong engine life, never suddenly increase speed while the engine is cold!
Note: The engine is considered warm when it responds normally to opening the throttle valve with the starter switched off (open air damper).
Starting a warm engine
Perform the same operations as when starting a cold engine, except use a jump starter (air damper) not necessary on a hot engine.
