Check for continuity between the motor case and the cable terminal.
There should be no continuity.
Check for continuity between the (+) and (-) terminals of the holder.
There should be no continuity.

Inspect the brushes for damage and measure the brush length.
Service limit: 4.5 mm (0.18 in).

Check the bushing of the rear cover for wear or damage.

Check the front cover oil seal for fatigue or damage.
Check the needle bearing for damage.

Inspect the commutator bars for discoloration.
Do not use emery or sandpaper on the commutator.
Bars that are discolored in pairs indicate grounded armature coils, in which case the starter motor must be replaced.
