This is an integrated ignition and sequential time fuel injection control unit.
Ignition and fuel injection are controlled by the injectors which switch between two steady states:
- Open: injector feeds fuel.
- Closed: injector does not feed fuel.
The control unit meters out the amount of fuel fed to the injectors and controls the injector opening times.
Ignition is controlled by an inductive discharge system consisting of two coils (one per cylinder) and power modules incorporated into the control unit.
The I.A.W control system reads the engine status from a series of inputs from sensors on the engine. Each sensor supplies the control unit with a specific item of information necessary to build up a complete picture of the current engine operating status.
The engine sensor provides a signal used to calculate the engine speed and the correct timing at TDC.
The throttle potentiometer signal indicates the throttle opening angles. The absolute pressure sensor signal indicates the ambient barometric pressure.
The water temperature sensor signal indicates the current engine operating temperature.
The air temperature indicates temperature of the air at the engine air intake.
The I.A.W. control system uses the "Alfa/N" control strategy to optimise engine operation. The "Alfa/N" control strategy uses the throttle angle (Alfa) and engine speed (N) parameters to control fuel injection and ignition. The control unit memory contains software tables showing the injection pulse duration, injection timing and ignition timing values corresponding to a particular engine speed and throttle opening. The other system inputs (water temperature, air temperature, pressure and battery charge) modify the correction factors applied to the values in the "Alfa/N" tables. The system applies other correction factors in situations (such as starting, sudden opening and closing of the throttle) where special ignition or injection methods are required.
