Prepare
1. Remove left side cover. See Side covers.
2. Lift rear of fuel tank. See Lift rear of fuel tank.
Check coolant level
Caution: At operating temperature, radiators and oil coolers contain hot fluids. Contact with a radiator or oil cooler can result in minor or moderate burns.
Note:
- Check coolant level with engine cold and motorcycle upright.
- If the coolant bottle is empty when the engine is cold, inspect the system for leaks. Repair as needed. Fill system with coolant and purge any trapped air.
1. See Figure 7-4. Check coolant level.
- a. Check that coolant level is at or slightly above the COLD FILL line (2).
2. If level is below COLD FILL line, add coolant.
- a. Remove overflow cap (1).
- b. Add GENUINE HARLEY-DAVIDSON EXTENDED LIFE ANTIFREEZE AND COOLANT until fluid level reaches COLD FILL line.
- c. Install overflow cap.
Drain and fill cooling system
Drain Cooling System
Warning: Do not loosen or remove pressure cap when engine is hot. The cooling system is under pressure and hot coolant and steam can escape from pressure cap, which could cause severe burns. Allow engine to cool before servicing the cooling system.
1. See Figure 7-5. Remove pressure cap.
- a. Place a cloth over pressure cap (1).
- b. Hold down on locking tab (3). Turn cap one-quarter turn counterclockwise to safety stop.
- c. Allow pressure to escape.
- d. Press down and turn cap to pass over safety stops.
- e. Remove cap from filler neck (2)
2. See Figure 7-6. Remove coolant drain screw.
3. Drain and discard used coolant.
Fill Cooling System
1. See Figure 7-6. Install coolant drain screw. Tighten to 10.0-12.0 Nm (89-106 in·lbs).
2. See Figure 7-5. Fill cooling system.
- a. Add GENUINE HARLEY-DAVIDSON EXTENDED LIFE ANTIFREEZE AND COOLANT until fluid reaches lower sealing surface of the filler neck (2).
- b. Install pressure cap (1). Verify locking tab (3) inserts into cap (2) as shown.
3. Run motorcycle.
4. See Figure 7-4. Check coolant level in coolant overflow tank.
- a. Allow motorcycle to cool.
- b. Set motorcycle upright.
- c. Check coolant level in coolant overflow tank.
5. If level is below "COLD FILL" line, add coolant.
- a. Remove overflow cap (1).
- b. Add GENUINE HARLEY-DAVIDSON EXTENDED LIFE ANTIFREEZE AND COOLANT until fluid level reaches "COLD FILL" line.
- c. Install overflow cap.
6. Repeat as necessary.
