Checking and centering front and rear wheel rims (BMW F650GS)

Remove the wheels.

Checking rims



[Rear wheel] Remove chainwheel carrier complete with chainwheel from the rear-wheel hub.

[Rear wheel] Remove the spacer on the left.

Remove tyre.

Level the balancing unit, BMW # 36 3 600, by means of bubble gauge (3) in the baseplate.

Pass the balancing shaft, BMW # 36 3 617, through the wheel bearings.

Lightly pretension bearing with knurled nut (1).

Fit wheel on balancing device.

Use pin (2) to lock the balancing shaft against the balancing stand to prevent the shaft from turning.

Push locating disc (4), BMW # 36 3 615, on to the balancing shaft on the opposite end, until there is no play at the balancing shaft. Secure the locating disc in position.

Note: Apply the dial gauge, BMW # 00 2 510, only to the machined inner surface of the wheel rim.


Measure lateral and vertical runout with dial gauge (5), BMW # 00 2 510.
  • Vertical runout: max. 2 mm (0.08 in)
  • Lateral runout: max. 2 mm (0.08 in)

Centering lateral runout





Caution! Never attempt to eliminate all the lateral runout by adjusting only one or two spokes.



Note: Vertical runout must be checked every time lateral runout is corrected.


Correct lateral runout "S" by tightening the spokes on the opposite side (arrow).

Lateral runout: max. 2 mm (0.08 in)

Centering vertical runout





Caution! Spokes which protrude from the spoke nipples must be shortened.


Correct vertical runout "H" by tightening the spokes at left and right (arrow).

Vertical runout: max. 2 mm (0.08 in)
