Removing and installing left/right engine cross-member (BMW K1200LT)

Caution: Note safety precautions; the fuel lines are pressurised.

  • Remove fuel tank.
  • Remove left and right sections of engine spoiler.
  • [Right]. Remove the air intake pipe.
  • Remove left and right skirt brackets.

Note: Remove the left and right radiators if the main frame has to be removed:

  • Remove the air outlet ducts from the right-hand and left-hand radiators.
  • Press right and left radiators, complete with fans, forward out of their holders.
  • Remove right and left radiator holders.


  • Disconnect crankcase breather at hose connection (arrow).
  • Remove fuel injection rail.

Note: The following work is necessary if the main frame is to be removed:
  • Disconnect throttle cables from handlebar fitting.
  • Disconnect Bowden cable for cruise control system from throttle-valve rail.
  • Disconnect lines at fuel rail and throttle-valve rail.
  • Remove throttle-valve rail complete with intake air silencer.
  • Attach hoist, BMW # 001510, to oil sump.




Note: The threads for securing the engine cross-member on the right-hand side of the engine are in the crankcase.

  • When removing and installing the engine crossmember, counter-hold the nut (5) on the left.
  • Release fasteners (2, 3, 4) and remove engine cross-member (1).
  • Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure: pay particular attention to the following.
  • Begin by loosely inserting all fasteners (2, 3, 4) on left and right and then tighten fully.

Tightening torques:
  • Cross-member, left/right, to frame — 74 Nm
  • Cross-member, left/right, to engine — 41 Nm
  • Radiator holder to frame/cross-member M 6 — 10 Nm
  • Radiator holder to fairing bracket M 8 — 21 Nm
