Removing and installing rear frame (BMW K1200LT)

Note: Lower the windscreen if the main frame has to be removed.

  • Disconnect negative cable from battery and insulate it.
  • Remove left and right fairing side sections.
  • Remove left and right battery covers.
  • Remove left and right rear footrests.
  • Remove the front and rear seats.
  • Remove the rear-mounted components.
  • Disconnect plugs of rear wiring harness.
  • Disconnect fuse boxes from holder for seat latch release.
  • Remove handwheel for adjusting spring strut from holder.
  • Remove rear brake fluid expansion tank.
  • Remove coolant expansion tank.
  • Disconnect the aerial cable from the radio control unit.
  • Remove the aerial bracket.
  • Disconnect the positive terminal from the reverser retaining plate.
  • Disconnect the ABS plug from the ABS control unit.
  • Remove the fasteners securing the holder for the plug on the left of the rear frame.
  • Remove the fastener securing the reverser control unit to the holder.
  • Remove the reverser control unit.
  • Disconnect plug for wiring harness from holder for reverser control unit.
  • Remove holder for reverser control unit.
  • Remove wiring harness from rear frame.
  • Remove 3 fasteners securing shield for reverser control unit.
  • Remove shield for reverser control unit.
  • Secure rear frame to workshop crane, BMW # 46 5 640, with straps.
  • Remove fasteners securing exhaust to rear frame.
  • Remove fastener securing battery tray to rear frame on right.


  • Remove fasteners (2) securing rear frame to main frame at bottom.
  • Remove protective cap from top fastener for rear frame.
  • Remove fasteners (1) securing rear frame to main frame at top.
  • Remove rear frame with workshop crane, BMW # 465640.
  • Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure: pay particular attention to the following.

Note: The motorcycle's type plate has to be replaced if a new rear frame is fitted.

  • Install bottom fastener (2) to locate rear frame and main frame.
  • Install top fastener (1) to locate rear frame and main frame.
  • Install the wiring harness.
  • Locate the coolant expansion tank in position.
  • Install holder for reverser control unit.
  • Install reverser control unit.
  • Route ABS cable below reverser control unit, install 2 Q plug and install ABS plug.
  • Install coolant expansion tank.
  • Connect positive terminal to holder for reverser control unit.
  • Connect ground terminal on rear frame on right.
  • Install handwheel for adjusting spring strut.
  • Tighten fasteners securing rear frame to main frame.
  • Install shield for reverser control unit.

Tightening torques:
  • Rear frame to main frame, top — 41 Nm
  • Rear frame to main frame, bottom (clean thread + Loctite 243) — 41 Nm
  • Rear footrest plate to frame — 21 Nm
  • Handwheel to rear frame — 21 Nm
  • Aerial holder to frame — 9 Nm
