Prepare
1. Remove headlamp fairing. See Headlamp fairing.
2. Disconnect clutch cable. See Clutch control.
3. Raise front wheel. See Motorcycle general maintenance, Secure the Motorcycle for Service.
Fall-away

Measure
1. See Figure 2-20. Center and tape a piece of lightweight cardboard 20-25 cm (8-10 in) across the front of the fender.
2. Mark the cardboard at center (1).
3. Mount an indicator to a floor stand. With the front wheel pointed straight ahead, position the indicator at the center of the fender.
4. Tap the fender on one side until the front fork begins to pivot (fall-away) without being tapped. Mark that point (3).
5. Repeat in the opposite direction.
6. Measure the distance (3) between the two fall-away marks.
7. If fall-away is not within specification, adjust the fork stem bolt. Refer to Table 2-7.

Adjust
1. See Figure 2-21. Loosen two lower bracket pinch screws (5).
2. Loosen fork stem pinch screw (3).
3. Tighten fork stem screw to 22.6 Nm (200 in·lbs).
4. Turn handlebar full left to full right three times.
5. Loosen fork stem screw 90 degrees.
6. Tighten fork stem screw to 8.5 Nm (75 in·lbs).
7. Measure front fork fall-away.
8. Adjust if necessary.
- a. If fall-away is more than the maximum, loosen the fork stem screw (1).
- b. If fall-away is less than the minimum, tighten the fork stem screw
9. Tighten fork stem pinch screw to 50.0-60.0 Nm (37-44 ft·lbs).
10. Tighten lower bracket pinch screws to 34.3-39.2 Nm (26-28 ft·lbs).

Lubricate
1. Disassemble the steering head assembly and lubricate the tapered roller bearings with SPECIAL PURPOSE GREASE. See Steering head/fork stem and bracket assembly.
Complete
1. Lower front wheel.
2. Connect clutch cable. See Clutch control.
3. Adjust clutch cable. See Check and adjust clutch.
4. Install headlamp fairing. See Headlamp fairing.
