Prepare
1. Remove front belt guard. See Belt guards.
2. Disconnect negative battery cable. See Power disconnect.
3. Lift rear of fuel tank. See Lift rear of fuel tank.
4. Remove air cleaner assembly. See Air cleaner assembly.
5. Remove cylinder head covers. See Cylinder head covers.
6. Remove spark plugs. See Replace spark plugs.
7. Raise rear wheel. See Motorcycle general maintenance, Secure the Motorcycle for Service.
Inspect and adjust

1. Rotate engine so that the measured cylinder is at TDC.
- a. Shift transmission into sixth gear.
- b. See Figure 2-30. Rotate rear wheel toward front of motorcycle until cam sprocket timing arrow (1) is perpendicular and the timing lines (2) are parallel to the cylinder head.
Measure
1. See Figure 2-31. Measure valve lash (3).
2. Record lash of each valve of one cylinder head.
3. Compare measurements with specifications. Refer to Table 4-5.
4. Repeat valve lash measurements on other cylinder head and record measurements.
Adjust
1. See Figure 2-31. Loosen jamnut (2) using TAPPET ADJUSTING WRENCH (Part No. HD-51502).
2. Adjust valve lash (3) to specifications. Refer to Table 4-5.
- a. Turn valve adjuster (1) clockwise to reduce valve lash. Turn valve adjuster counter-clockwise to increase valve lash.
3. Holding valve adjuster in position, tighten jamnut to 10.0-12.0 Nm (89-106 in·lbs).

Complete
1. Shift transmission into NEUTRAL.
2. Lower rear wheel.
3. Install spark plugs. See Replace spark plugs.
4. Install cylinder head covers. See Cylinder head covers.
5. Install air cleaner assembly. See Air cleaner assembly.
6. Secure rear of fuel tank. See Lift rear of fuel tank.
7. Connect negative battery cable. See Power disconnect.
8. Install front belt guard. See Belt guards.
