Prepare
1. Remove front belt guard. See Belt guards.
2. Disconnect negative battery cable. See Power disconnect.
3. Remove fuel tank. See Fuel tank.
4. Remove exhaust system. See Exhaust system.
5. Remove air cleaner assembly. See Air cleaner assembly.
6. Remove breather hoses. See Breather hoses.
7. Remove induction module. See Induction module.
8. Remove cylinder head covers. SeeCylinder head covers.
9. Remove clutch cover. See Clutch cover.
10. Remove crankshaft gear. See Crankshaft gear.
11. Remove alternator cover and alternator. See Removing and installing alternator.
12. Remove camshaft sprocket and timing chain. See Camshaft sprocket and timing chain.
Remove
1. See Figure 4-17. Remove cylinder head.
- a. Remove flange bolts (2).
- b. Remove cylinder head bolts (3) and washers (4).
- c. Lift cylinder head (1) from dowel pins (6).
- d. Discard gasket (5).

Install

1. See Figure 4-17. Install cylinder head.
- a. Install new gasket (5) with the surface marked TOP facing up.
- b. Install cylinder head (1) on dowel pins (6).
2. Install cylinder head bolts.
- a. Apply new engine oil to washers (4) and threaded portion of the cylinder head bolts (3).
- b. Install washers and cylinder head bolts.
- c. See Figure 4-18. Tighten cylinder head bolts in sequence shown to 50.0-54.0 Nm (37-39 ft·lbs).
3. See Figure 4-17. Install flange bolts.
- a. Apply new engine oil to threaded portion of the flange bolts (2).
- b. Install flange bolts (2).
- c. See Figure 4-18. Tighten flange bolts in sequence shown to 20.0-25.0 Nm (15-18 ft·lbs).

Disassemble
1. Remove rocker arms. See Rocker arms.
2. Remove camshaft assembly. See Camshaft assembly.
3. Remove valves. See Removing and installing valves.
Clean and inspect
1. Clean all parts thoroughly.
2. Inspect cylinder head for damage. Repair or replace as necessary.
3. Inspect mating surfaces.
- a. Inspect mating surfaces for damage and warping.
- b. Repair or replace as necessary.
Assemble
1. Install valves. See Removing and installing valves.
2. Install camshaft assembly. See Camshaft assembly.
3. Install rocker arms. See Rocker arms.
Complete
1. Install camshaft sprocket and timing chain. See Camshaft sprocket and timing chain.
2. Rear cylinder: Install alternator rotor and alternator cover. See Removing and installing alternator.
3. Front cylinder: Install crankshaft gear and clutch cover. See Crankshaft gear.
4. Install cylinder head covers. See Cylinder head covers.
5. Install induction module. See Induction module.
6. Install breather hoses. See Breather hoses.
7. Install air cleaner assembly. See Air cleaner assembly.
8. Install exhaust system. See Exhaust system.
9. Install fuel tank. See Fuel tank.
10. Connect negative battery cable. See Power disconnect.
11. Install front belt guard. See Belt guards.
