Prepare
1. Remove front belt guard. See Belt guards.
2. Disconnect negative battery cable. See Power disconnect.
3. Lift rear of fuel tank. See Lift rear of fuel tank.
4. Remove exhaust system. See Exhaust system.
5. Remove air cleaner assembly. See Air cleaner assembly.
6. Remove breather hoses. See Breather hoses.
7. Remove induction module. See Induction module.
8. Remove cylinder head covers. SeeCylinder head covers.
9. Remove clutch cover. See Clutch cover.
10. Remove crankshaft gear. See Crankshaft gear.
11. Remove alternator. See Removing and installing alternator.
12. Remove cam sprocket and timing chain. See Camshaft sprocket and timing chain.
13. Remove cylinder head. See Cylinder heads.
14. Remove rocker arms. See Rocker arms.
15. Remove camshaft assembly. See Camshaft assembly.

1. Secure cylinder head for service.
- a. Install CYLINDER HEAD HOLDING FIXTURE (Part No. HD-39786) into cylinder head spark plug hole.
- b. Secure cylinder head and tool in vise.
2. See Figure 4-21. Remove valves.
- a. Place VALVE SPRING COMPRESSOR (Part No. HD-37436) over cylinder head. Align with valve assembly.
- b. Slowly compress valve spring.
- c. Remove valve keeper (1).
- d. Slowly release valve spring.
- e. Remove valve spring compressor.
- f. Remove valve spring retainer (2).
- g. Remove valve spring (3).
- h. Discard valve seal (4).
- i. Remove spring seat washer (5).
- j. Remove valve (7).

Install

1. See Figure 4-21. Install spring seat washer (5).
2. Install new valve seal (4).
3. Secure cylinder head for service.
- a. Install CYLINDER HEAD HOLDING FIXTURE (Part No. HD-39786) into cylinder head spark plug hole.
- b. Secure cylinder head and tool in vise.
4. Install valve.
- a. Lubricate valve stem with new engine oil.
Note: Rotate valve while installing to avoid damage to valve seal.
- b. Install valve until fully seated.
- c. Install valve spring (3).
- d. Install valve spring retainer (2).
- e. Place VALVE SPRING COMPRESSOR (Part No. HD-37436) over cylinder head. Align with valve assembly.
- f. Compress valve spring.
- g. Install valve keeper (1).
- h. Slowly release valve spring.
- I. Remove valve spring compressor.
5. Remove cylinder head from holding fixture.
Clean and inspect
1. Clean all parts thoroughly.
2. Inspect valve surface and seat surface for imperfections. Repair or replace as necessary.
Complete
1. Install camshaft assembly. See Camshaft assembly.
2. Install rocker arms. See Rocker arms.
3. Install cylinder head. See Cylinder heads.
4. Install cam sprocket and timing chain. See Camshaft sprocket and timing chain.
5. Install alternator. See Removing and installing alternator.
6. Install crankshaft gear. See Crankshaft gear.
7. Install clutch cover. See Clutch cover.
8. Install cylinder head covers. See Cylinder head covers.
9. Install induction module. See Induction module.
10. Install breather hoses. See Breather hoses.
11. Install air cleaner assembly. See Air cleaner assembly.
12. Install exhaust system. See Exhaust system.
13. Secure rear of fuel tank. See Lift rear of fuel tank.
14. Connect negative battery cable. See Power disconnect.
