Prepare
1. Remove front belt guard. See Belt guards.
2. Disconnect negative battery cable. See Power disconnect.
3. Lift rear of fuel tank. See Lift rear of fuel tank.
4. Remove exhaust system. See Exhaust system.
5. Remove air cleaner assembly. See Air cleaner assembly.
6. Remove breather system. See Breather hoses.
7. Remove cylinder head covers. See Cylinder head covers.
8. Remove clutch cover. See Clutch cover.
9. Remove crankshaft gear. See Clutch cover.
10. Remove alternator cover and alternator. See Removing and installing alternator.
11. Remove cam sprocket and timing chain. See Camshaft sprocket and timing chain.
Remove
1. See Figure 4-19. Release tension from valves.
- a. Loosen valve adjuster nut (3).
- b. Loosen valve adjuster assembly (1) to remove tension from valve spring.
2. Remove camshaft retainer plate.
- a. Remove screws (7).
- b. Remove camshaft retainer plate (6) from cylinder head assembly (9).
Note: If necessary, insert an M8 screw into end of rocker shaft to assist in removal.
3. Remove rocker arms.
- a. Remove rocker shafts (5).
- b. Remove intake rocker arm (2) and exhaust rocker arm (4).

Install

1. See Figure 4-19. Install rocker arms.
- a. Lubricate intake rocker shaft (5) and the bore of intake rocker arm (2) with new engine oil.
- b. Align intake rocker arm to the cylinder head assembly 0).
- c. Install non-threaded end of rocker shafts into cylinder head.
- d. Repeat for exhaust rocker shaft.
2. Install camshaft retainer plate.
- a. Install retainer plate (6) along the machined groove (8) on the camshaft.
- b. Install screws (7). Tighten to 10.0-12.0 Nm (89-106 in·lbs).
3. Adjust valves. See Inspect and adjust valve lash
Clean and inspect
1. Clean all parts.
2. Inspect for wear. Replace as necessary.
- a. Inspect rocker arm bore.
- b. Inspect valve adjusting assembly for excessive wear.
- c. Inspect roller cam and shaft for excessive wear.
Complete
1. Install cam sprocket and timing chain. See Camshaft sprocket and timing chain.
2. Rear cylinder: Install alternator rotor. See Removing and installing alternator.
3. Front cylinder: Install crankshaft gear. See Crankshaft gear.
4. Install cylinder head covers. See Cylinder head covers.
5. Install breather hoses. See Breather hoses.
6. Install air cleaner assembly. See Air cleaner assembly.
7. Install exhaust system. See Exhaust system.
8. Secure rear of fuel tank. See Lift rear of fuel tank.
9. Connect negative battery cable. See Inspect battery.
10. Install front belt guard. See Belt guards.
